Where Class Meets Capital

Blue Eagle Capital Student-led Investment Fund

Blue Eagle Capital is a student-run investment fund that enables our master of finance students an opportunity both to learn the institutional investment management process and experience the responsibility for ownership of a fund’s performance. Work on the fund is integrated into the program's practicum courses under the guidance of faculty and fund advisor, Professor Kirsten Travers-UyHam, a professional portfolio manager. Students leverage the Finance Lab, which is designed as a trading space with state-of-the-art trading, research, and presentation platforms.

  • Student Led

Students may apply for chief officer positions within the fund and will go through an interview process each October. Any interested students may hold analyst positions.
  • Operations

Students meet at least once a month for an Investment Committee Meeting to collaborate on the fund’s strategy, market outlook and assessment of new and existing positions.
  • Feedback

The fund will run similarly to a real investment management firm with oversight and expertise provided to the students by the fund’s faculty advisor, Kirsten Travers-UyHam.

How It Works

The fund seeks to grow capital by generating excellent risk-adjusted returns across a full market cycle by investing in a balanced portfolio of liquid US equity positions across a variety of regions and industry sectors.
Blue Eagle Capital
  • Assessment

We begin the process with a top-down assessment of global economic and market conditions, trends, and corporate opportunities. From this, we build an array of clearly defined, key strategic themes around which to build the portfolio each semester.
  • Research

Our team of analysts perform fundamental research and use screening tools to identify stocks that are poised to outperform the benchmark S&P 500 index. Recent investments in 2023 included companies in the healthcare, communication, consumer discretionary, and technology sectors. We have built a proprietary trade booking and trade blotter system to manage incoming trades. We then book the portfolio into Bloomberg, where we can track the markets and the portfolio returns.
  • Screening

We monitor the global themes and our portfolio over time based, making changes based on our outlook of regional conditions, identifiable catalysts, fundamental valuation of assets, global economic cycles, and technical factors. We combine qualitative and quantitative techniques with a practical knowledge of the markets to pitch new ideas during the investment committee meetings.
  • Portfolio Construction

Students use market models and exposure analysis within Bloomberg to assess the market risk of the portfolio. Portfolio risk is measured and managed according to established disciplines including market risk limits, sector concentration limits, and trading stop losses.
  • Publications

Analysts write and publish our weekly market commentary. The investment committee presents a summary of fund performance, risk, and attribution analysis to the class each month. All students work on our annual market outlook, which we publish each January. Risk and compliance reports are also available to potential investors upon request.
