Launched in April 2007, the Real Estate Program at Goizueta Business School was developed in response to the industry’s growing demand for MBA caliber graduates nationwide. Located in one of the most active and dynamic real estate markets in the country, Goizueta has strong real estate connections and resources in Atlanta. This initiative aims to use those resources in combination with formal real estate coursework to train students to enter the real estate industry following graduation.
Developing a formal real estate program was a natural progression for the School. Roy T. Black, who has taught part-time at Goizueta since 1999, was brought on to spearhead the program. Prior to entering academia, he spent 15 years as a real estate attorney. Black has seen his typical class size of 30 students and his load of one or two courses a year swell to the establishment of a program.
Because finance is the heart of the program, the program is centered in the Finance department at Goizueta. Students are trained in the nuances of real estate industry, with emphasis on factors that make up the market and the intricacies of properties as an asset in money management. In addition to fundamentals, students receive high-level training in development, REITS and capital markets. Courses allow flexibility and interaction with local professionals, giving students a competitive advantage. Because real estate also involves marketing, strategy and other aspects of business, students are encouraged to take classes from a variety of academic areas to enrich their understanding of the industry, including classes in the Emory Law School, other Emory departments and other Atlanta-area universities.
