Introduction
The annual conference marks its sixth year in 2009 and has become a sought after, one-day professional development event for executive level businesswomen. It has brought together powerful women who have shared their insight, creating an amazing day of professional development, empowerment and networking.
By attending the conference, you will gain the ability to better manage change and challenge during these unusual times. EWG Partners with Dress for Success
As we did at our 2008 annual conference, EWG has a community partnership with Dress for Success. Dress for Success Atlanta is a not-for-profit organization that offers services to help women enter the workforce, stay employed, advance in their careers and improve their lives. At the conference, we will be collecting trail size/hotel sample sized toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, feminine hygiene products, etc.). -Harnessing the Power of Workplace Culture – To be successful change leaders, it is critical for individual contributors and managers to understand how to navigate the culture of their workplaces. Underlying cultural currents can push people off course or pull them toward their goal. Participants will leave the session with an introductory understanding of the basics of how to shape workplace culture to more easily achieve project and career goals. It is an interactive session with two primary deliverables: (1) how to act as the "chief communicator" for helping people think and act differently, and (2) what are the three levels of intervention necessary for culture change to occur. -A Strategic Approach for Managing Your Visibility: Bringing Your Best-Self to Light – Leaders often find themselves in the spotlight - their actions garner a great deal of public attention and scrutiny. Women executives often find that they face additinal scrutiny as they climb the corporate ladder. This session will focus on how to manage your visibility such that your best-self remains in the spotlight as you grow and develop as a leader. Speaker and Panelist Bios
Robin Bienfait is the CIO of Research in Motion. Robin oversees BlackBerry Operations and Corporate IT. Prior to joing RIM, Robin held senior leadership positions within AT&T Labs and Global Networking Services.
A graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a master's degree in Management of Technology, Robin also holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from Central Missouri State University and an associate in business degree from Maryland University - European Division.
Roxanne Douglas is Chief Counsel of Revenue Management Solutions for McKesson Corporation and leads the legal support group for the business unit that provides physician practice management services nationwide.
Ms. Douglas has led advisory practices for technology companies in a variety of areas, including product development/marketing/re-design, technology licensing, contract negotiation, sales and marketing, mergers & acquisitions, disputes and litigation, and risk assessment and compliance. She also has assisted clients with international joint ventures and other business interests.
Ms. Douglas currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Families First, Board of Directors Network, and Leadership Atlanta. She is a graduate of Washburn University and holds a law degree from Georgia State University. Ms. Douglas is an avid exerciser, enjoys golf and has been deemed an intense political spectator. She is the mother of one, Quincy Douglas Atkinson.
Brenda Freeman is Chief Marketing Officer for Turner Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media, responsible for providing overall vision and leadership to all areas of marketing, on-air and trade creative services that support the cable television networks Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang, along with their digital businesses. Her duties include developing the strategic marketing plans directed at building these businesses among key constituencies—viewers, users, ad sales clients, promotional partners, affiliates and industry trade communities. A veteran brand marketing and promotion executive, Freeman previously was senior vice president of integrated marketing and promotions for Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. In this position, she oversaw development and execution of all promotions marketing efforts for the media brands Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Noggin, The N, NickToons Network, and Nick at Nite, as well as Nickelodeon magazines and Nick Digital businesses. Prior to that, Freeman served as vice president of consumer marketing for VH1, where she oversaw all consumer and off-channel marketing for the company as well as digital marketing for the network, and the digital networks VH1 Classic and VH1 Soul. Freeman also previously worked as vice president, affiliate marketing, Entertainment Group for MTV Networks, implementing marketing strategy around affiliate efforts in brand promotion, distribution support, and local ad sales promotional support for Spike TV, Nickelodeon, Noggin, Nick GAS, NickToons, Nick at Nite and TVLand.
Freeman earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and a MBA in marketing and finance, both from the University of Maryland. She is a board member of Women in Cable and Television (WICT) and serves on the Advisory Board for the University of Maryland College of Engineering.
Rhonda Harper knows marketing from the inside out, identifies with client issues of all kinds, and has an uncanny ability to think creatively and get things done. A change-making leader with 20 years of marketing experience, Ms. Harper led some of the world’s biggest and best brands before founding her own marketing firm, Real Truth Marketing & Joy (RTM&J). With experience in retail, consumer package goods, and apparel, Rhonda has been instrumental in: driving brand innovation and marketing performance; developing more effective brand and marketing organizations; and creating powerful brand portfolios.
Prior to founding RTM&J in 2001, Ms. Harper was one of approximately 150 global officers and Vice President of Marketing & Strategy of Walmart Stores Inc. / Sam's Club. Rhonda also served as an Officer and Vice President of Marketing VF Corp/VFI, the world’s largest apparel manufacturer. She earned her stripes in brand management, marketing and promotion with Warner-Lambert and Nabisco Biscuit Company.
Ms. Harper is on the Board of Directors for Emory's Goizueta School of Business, where she attained an Master of Business Administration; Leadership Worth Following, a talent identification, assessment and development firm (www.worthyleadership.com) founded by the former president of Personnel Decisions Inc. (PDI); and Partnership Against Domestic Violence (www.padv.org).
Donna Hyland, first as Chief Financial Officer, then Chief Operating Officer and now as President and Chief Executive Officer, Donna W. Hyland has overseen monumental growth at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She was instrumental during the 1998 merger of Egleston Children’s Health Care System and Scottish Rite Children’s Medical Center that led to the formation of one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country. And most recently, she transitioned Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital into the Children’s family. In 2007, Ms. Hyland led the development of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Vision 2018 Strategy, which defines the organization’s journey to achieve clinical excellence by focusing on research, teaching and wellness.
For her work in pediatric healthcare, Ms. Hyland was named one of the 2007 Women of Excellence by Business to Business magazine. In 2008, Ms. Hyland was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Children’s, becoming the only female CEO among the top 25 hospitals in Atlanta. Ms. Hyland’s dedication to the community includes serving on the board of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Metro Atlanta YMCA. Ms. Hyland has also chaired a Task Force within the Commission for a New Georgia and has served on the Health Strategies Council.
Currently, Ms. Hyland serves as a Trustee on the Board for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Ms. Hyland, a certified public accountant, attended the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University. Ms. Hyland and her husband Paul reside in Atlanta with their two children.
Terri Kruzan andher Atlanta-based company, Culture Consulting, are recognized experts in aligning the culture of organizations to most efficiently achieve business results. With over 20 years of experience, her unique expertise is in aiding in the development of concrete skills within organization in order to confront business crises and effectively implement strategic change. Ms. Kruzan is the humorous voice behind the blog, Leading-Workplace-Change, a finalist in the Stevie® Awards for Women in Business. She received an Master of Business Administration from Goizueta School of Business at Emory University and a Bachelor of Arts from Mt. Holyoke College.
A veteran in the commercial interiors industry and an advocate for environmental sustainability, Joyce LaValle is Senior Vice President of Customer and Associate Engagement and Senior VP of Marketing for Interface Americas. As Senior VP of Associate and Customer Engagement, she is responsible for developing initiatives to strengthen the company’s ties among associates and customers, and has played an integral role in implementing a strengths-based leadership and development program. In her marketing role, Ms. LaValle combines extensive knowledge of sales and customer needs with design-driven marketing savvy.
Ms. LaValle is passionate about sustainability education and maximizing people’s talent. This passion led her to create a series of events for design professionals that use personal development as a means for leadership development. She is a founding member of the Women’s Network for a Sustainable Future, and was also a key participant in the formation of Interface’s IWIN (Interface Women In Network), a workplace affiliation group which focuses on positive roles women play in the success of Interface, Inc.
Ms. LaValle was named one of the “most innovative minds in Atlanta” by Inspiring Futures in 2008. In 2007, she was honored by the New York chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) with an inaugural “LEEDer” Award for her “extraordinary dedication and service to the cause of green building and work in furthering the chapter’s mission of transforming the metropolitan New York marketplace.”
Ms. LaValle was educated in England and the United States before completing the Keenan Flagler Advanced Management Program at UNC Chapel Hill.
Hala Moddelmog, the first female executive to lead an international quick-service restaurant brand (QSR), became president and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in 2006. A breast cancer survivor herself, Ms. Moddelmog is a resilient, focused leader of the Susan B. Komen American Cancer Society’s initiative to eradicate breast cancer. She has pledged to increase investments of more than $1 billion in research and community health programs with another $2 billion by 2017.
During her tenure at QSR, Ms. Moddelmog revitalized the brand, increased market share, realized record sales and profit and drove international expansion. As an advocate of career opportunities and development, she strengthened the reputation of the QSR, particularly with women and minorities.
Recognized for innovativeness and strategic brand development, Ms. Moddelmog brings a stellar record to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. She implemented a scientific advisory board, which has better positioned the organization’s research grants program to significantly decrease global breast cancer incidence and mortality. Ms. Moddelmog also led a delegation of U.S. breast cancer advocates to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Global Advocate Summit, launching the Global Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness. She traveled with Mrs. Laura Bush to initiate Partnerships for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research in Saudi Arabia and Mexico, pioneering steps toward addressing the shame and secrecy surrounding women’s health issues.
Ms. Moddelmog earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Georgia Southern University and a Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Georgia. Georgia Southern University granted her an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree in 2007. She is married with two children.
Laura Morgan Roberts, Ph.D. is an educator, researcher and organizational consultant. She is the co-founder and senior partner of R-PAQ Solutions, LLC, an Atlanta-based research and consulting firm, offering strength-based practices to current and aspiring leaders who seek extraordinary performance and personal fulfillment. As a professor of organizational behavior, Ms. Roberts has served on the faculty of the Harvard Business School for six years, and has been a visiting professor at the University of Michigan, the Wharton School, Simmons School of Management, and Georgia State University. She is a faculty affiliate of the Center for Gender in Organizations at the Simmons School of Management in Boston. Ms. Roberts is also a faculty affiliate of the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business in Ann Arbor.
Ms. Roberts has been published in numerous journals such as the Academy of Management Review and Harvard Business Review. She is an author in the edited book, Exploring Positive Identities and Organizations. Her work focuses on the issues of authenticity, identity, diversity, and strengths of individuals. Ms. Roberts guides people in discovering self, crafting careers, developing leaders and learning about, from, and across dimensions of difference. She also provides consultation to individuals and organizations on professional image management, discovery and development of strengths, and expansion of cultural competence.
A native of Gary, Indiana, Ms. Roberts earned a Bacelor of Arts in Psychology and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia. and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from the University of Michigan.
Brandon Smith is a Founding Principal of Core Growth Partners, a consulting firm specializing in leadership development and strategic culture building. With extensive experience in both executive development and corporate growth, Mr. Smith’s expertise lies in leadership development, alignment and growth, team optimization and conflict resolution, and strategic culture design and execution. His work at Core Growth Partners is most notable for its cutting edge approach at marrying leadership development with strategy definition and execution. Mr. Smith has worked with organizations representing industries ranging from quick service restaurants to engineering services, including numerous Fortune 100 “Best Companies To Work For.” Mr. Smith serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Practice of Management Communication at the Goizueta Business School at Emory University. He is a frequent contributor to publications in areas of leadership, culture, and strategy and co-hosts the “@ Work” radio show on Georgia Public Radio. Mr. Smith received an Bachelor of Arts from Vanderbilt University with a concentration in communications and team dynamics. His graduate work includes a Master of Science in Counseling from Georgia State University and a Master of Business Administration from Emory University's Goizueta Business School. Mr. Smith resides in Atlanta with his wife and their three children.
Jacqueline M. Welch Jacqueline M. Welch is Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.). In this capacity, Ms. Welch is responsible for leading corporate-level global talent management, diversity and development functions. Ms. Welch’s management portfolio includes the company’s succession-planning, performance-management, diversity initiatives, learning & development and organizational-development activity, toward the larger goal of ensuring that Turner’s people resources are without peer and are positioned to support its business strategies. Ms. Welch joined TBS, Inc. after more than six years with Rock-Tenn Company in Atlanta, where she was vice president of employee and organizational effectiveness. Earlier in her career, she was a senior manager at Accenture; an associate with Towers Perrin; and an internal consultant for Lord & Taylor, a division of The May Department Stores Company. Ms. Welch earned a Bachelor of Arts in English at Syracuse University and a Master of Human Resources Management at Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy in New York. An alumna of Leadership Atlanta, her community involvement includes board membership in The United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta Alexis de Tocqueville Society and The Partnership Against Domestic Violence. She is co-chair of The United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta Cole Society.
Julia Wallace is the Editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and ajc.com, an organization of talented and experienced journalists, who provide the best and most comprehensive news and information for metro Atlanta. Ms. Wallace was named editor in July of 2002, after serving as managing editor for 18 months. During her tenure, ajc.com has grown into one of the most popular newspaper websites in the country, logging more than a billion page views annually since 2007. She has focused on improving the content of the newspaper -- focusing on unique local content, including watchdog reporting and great storytelling. Ms. Wallace was named editor of the year by Editor & Publisher magazine in 2004. The paper was awarded Pulitzer Prizes in 2006 and 2007. She been inducted into the Medill School Of Journalism Hall of Achievement and received the Alumni Merit Award from Northwestern University in 2006. Prior to moving to Atlanta, Ms. Wallace more than 20 years working for several newspapers across the United States, as a reporter, managing editor/special projects and executive editor. Ms. Wallace is Chairman of the National Advisory Board for the Poynter Institute. She served on the board of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and has been a Pulitzer Prize juror five times. She is married and has two daughters and two step-daughters.
